Growing older brings physical changes  reduced strength, stiffer joints, slower recovery, and a gradual loss of the confidence that comes with moving freely. But loss of mobility is not inevitable, and it is rarely irreversible. With the right physiotherapy, delivered at the right time and in the right environment, older adults can regain function, reduce pain, and hold on to the independence that defines their quality of life.

At Birmingham Physiocare Ltd, based on Pershore Road in the heart of Birmingham, our specialist physiotherapists have extensive experience working with older adults across a wide range of conditions from post-surgical recovery and neurological rehabilitation to falls prevention and long-term mobility management. We treat patients at our clinic and through our dedicated domiciliary home visit service, visiting patients at home across Birmingham, Selly Oak, Harborne, Edgbaston, Moseley, Bournville, Kings Heath, Northfield, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and the wider West Midlands.

No GP referral required. No waiting lists. Just expert, compassionate physiotherapy for older adults delivered where it is needed most.

How We Approach Physiotherapy For Older Adults

Step 1: A Thorough Assessment Built Around You

Every patient is different particularly older adults, who often present with multiple conditions, complex medication histories and physical goals that go beyond the clinical. Your physiotherapist takes the time to conduct a full assessment of your condition, your mobility, your home environment and what matters most to you personally. We speak clearly, we listen carefully, and we involve family members or carers wherever that helps.

Step 2: A Personalised Treatment Plan

Based on your assessment, your physiotherapist designs a treatment plan built entirely around your specific needs and goals. For some patients that means regaining the ability to walk to the end of the garden. For others it means recovering from a hip replacement and returning to independence in the kitchen. Whatever your goal, your plan is built to reach it with realistic timescales and clear markers.

    Step 3: Hands-On Treatment & Guided Exercise

Your physiotherapist delivers hands-on manual therapy, guided strengthening exercises, balance work, gait rehabilitation and mobility training in the clinic or in your own home. For patients with conditions such as osteoarthritis or persistent tendon pain, we may incorporate specialist treatments such as Shockwave Therapy or Musculoskeletal Ultrasound to provide an accurate diagnosis.

Step 4: Falls Prevention & Home Safety

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospital admissions in adults over 65 in the UK. For patients at risk, we conduct a dedicated falls prevention assessment identifying hazards in the home, improving balance and lower limb strength, reviewing footwear and walking aids, and providing practical advice that reduces the risk of falls before they happen.

    Step 5: Long-Term Support & Family Liaison

Many older adults benefit from longer-term physiotherapy input rather than a fixed course of sessions. We offer ongoing care with regular reassessment, ensuring that progress is maintained and that treatment evolves as the patient's condition changes. We liaise with GPs, consultants, care teams and family members as needed keeping everyone involved and informed.

What Our Patients Say About Their Journey

A woman supports a man's knee as he sits on the floor, indicating a therapeutic interaction post-surgery physiotherapy Birmingham

At 78 I was not sure what to expect from physiotherapy after my hip replacement. Birmingham Physiocare were patient, thorough and genuinely kind. The physiotherapist came to my home, assessed how I was managing the stairs and the bathroom, and built my programm around my actual daily life  not a textbook. Three months on and I am walking further than I was before the operation.

After my second fall in six months, my daughter arranged for Birmingham Physiocare to come and see me. The physiotherapist identified problems I had not even noticed the way I was turning, the mat by the front door, my walking technique. The programm they put together has genuinely changed how safe I feel in my own home. I have not fallen since.

I had been told my knee pain was simply part of getting older and there was little to be done. Birmingham Physiocare disagreed. They used ultrasound to properly assess what was happening in the joint, identified the actual problem and treated it accordingly. The improvement in my mobility and my pain levels has been remarkable. I only wish I had come sooner

My husband has Parkinson's and his mobility had been declining gradually over the past two years. The physiotherapist from Birmingham Physiocare visits him at home every fortnight and the consistency of that relationship has made a real difference. He is more confident, his walking is steadier and he manages the stairs independently again. The care has been exceptional throughout.
